Parliamentary Committees are groups of Members of the Legislative Assembly appointed by the Assembly to assist the Parliament with carrying out its mandated functions.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Parliamentary Committee<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There are currently five Parliamentary Committees which consist of at least five (5) members and are established under Standing Orders 171-175 such as:\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Social Sector Committee.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  4. \n
    Economic Sector Committee.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Additionally, there is also a Privileges and Ethics Committee that also operates when the Legislative Assembly<\/div>
    deems it necessary to deal with matters of privilege and overall conduct of Members, pursuant to the Legislative<\/div>
    Assembly Powers and Privileges Ordinance 1960 and Standing Order 177.<\/div><\/div>

    Importance of Committees:<\/strong><\/span><\/div>
    \u2022 Committees contribute to increasing public awareness on issues considered by Parliament and deliberate<\/div>
    on matters referred from the Assembly to ensure certain areas of Government administration are well<\/div>
    scrutinized; mostly on new bills and amendments to existing legislation after the second reading stage<\/div>
    in the Assembly. Once a bill is referred, they have the power to summon persons, and or send for papers<\/div>
    and records relevant to their proceedings and can meet in places away from Parliament precinct (only upon<\/div>
    the Speaker\u2019s approval).<\/div>
    \u00a0<\/div>
    \u2022 Committees provide another form of checks and balances \u2013 through its effective scrutiny of the Executive;<\/div>
    Committees consider and deliberate on Government ministries and organizations reports such as: annual reports,<\/div>
    statement of corporate objectives, corporate plans, public accounts, auditor\u2019s report on irregularities,<\/div>
    etc\u2026 presented to the Assembly.<\/div>
    \u00a0<\/div>
    \u2022 Committees provide an avenue for the public to contribute (be part) of the legislative process; through<\/div>
    their submissions to respective Committees on various new or amending laws referred to Committees.<\/div>

    \u2022 Committees may conduct site visits to ensure what has been reported by Government Ministries<\/div>
    on different projects are indeed factual and in line with its expenditure.<\/div><\/div>

    Committee Reports:<\/strong><\/span><\/div>

    Committee Reports are in the form of written documents which outlines their findings and recommendations for the Government to consider and respond accordingly.<\/div>
